“Treasures of the Queen” Exhibit Extended Through September

The University of Arizona continues to celebrate historic Bisbee and an exhibition of rare Bisbee minerals at the Flandrau Science Center and the UA Mineral Museum. Thanks to the generosity of the specimen owners, this exhibit – “Treasures of the Queen: The Amazing Minerals and Mystery of Bisbee, Arizona” – has been extended through September.
This special exhibition highlights Bisbee’s rich culture as Arizona’s booming, bustling, “Little San Fran” mining town. Join us to view extraordinary minerals from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, minerals from private collections that have never been on public display, and other artifacts and vintage clothing that bring this famous time alive again!
Visitors can view a large, rare, colorful cuprite (pronounced “KYOO-prahyt”) – which has a brilliance greater than diamonds – as well as beautiful azurite (AZH-uh-rahyt) and malachite (MAL-uh-kahyt) specimens, among others. The exhibit also gives visitors a background on Bisbee’s amazing caves and cave formations.
“Treasures of the Queen” also traces Bisbee’s rich history and pivotal role in Arizona’s journey to statehood, and includes an exhibit of textiles and artifacts from 1880 through the 1940s.
This unique look into the minerals and history of Bisbee is made possible by a generous gift from the Freeport McMoRan Foundation.
The exhibit is on display upstairs from the UA Mineral Museum, in the Galaxy Room of the science center. The main gallery of Flandrau science exhibits and planetarium are also available with admission. School groups can reserve Monday through Friday field trips for a fee by making a reservation online.
For more information, call 520-621-4516. The science store will be open during regular business hours, offering unique science and mineral related books, games, toys and clothing.

Thank you for the invitation. I’m particularly intrested because my husband and I spent five years in the 70’s owning and restoring historic buildings, including the Copper Queen Hotel. Marcia Hutchison

Loved the Bisbee display you have.
Would like to see better lighting in the one display with the Connellite and Atacamite/Paratacamite. The light does not do them justice at all.
Other than that it was the best Bisbee selection I have seen.
Want to come back and see the collection again.
Sincerely

Rolf, thanks for the suggestion on the mineral lighting. I passed your comment on to Mark Candee, the Mineral Museum curatorial specialist, and he is working on improving the display you referenced. We appreciate your support!
